What South Governs
The South direction in Vastu is ruled by Yama, the lord of dharma, ancestors, and longevity. Despite popular fear of South-facing houses, the South is NOT inherently inauspicious — it's the direction of stability, weight, and ancestral support. The misconception comes from confusing 'South-facing entrance' (which has specific Vastu requirements) with 'South direction generally' (which is essential for any home).
South governs longevity, ancestral karma, the male head of household's wellbeing, durable assets (real estate, vehicles, gold), and patience. It is the direction where heavy elements should naturally settle: the master bedroom (with the bed-head pointing South for best sleep), heavy storage, libraries, and the cash safe (against the South wall, opening toward North).
A common Vastu mistake is keeping the South too 'light' — large windows, no walls, light furniture. The South should be heavy, walled, with minimal openings. This anchors the home's energy and prevents prosperity from leaking out.

Why is sleeping head-South considered the best?▼
