East
The dawn direction — Indra's quarter, governing health, vitality, and new beginnings.
What East Governs
The East is where the sun rises — the most spiritually auspicious direction in Vastu, ruled by Indra. Morning sunlight entering through East-facing windows is considered the single most prana-charged influence on a home, sterilising the space, energising occupants, and supporting health.
East governs health, fame, social standing, public success, and the welfare of male children. It's the natural seat of activities that benefit from morning energy: prayer, meditation, exercise, study, and any work that requires fresh thinking. Children's bedrooms in the East support their growth and academic success.
Blocking the East — with tall trees, heavy walls, or no windows — is one of the most common Vastu mistakes in modern apartments. The result is sluggish mornings, recurrent illnesses, and a 'stuck' family energy that no amount of decoration corrects.
Best Uses
- ✓Main entrance (East-facing is second only to North-facing for entrances)
- ✓Pooja room / meditation space (morning sunlight charges spiritual energy)
- ✓Children's study area / bedroom
- ✓Living room with large East windows
- ✓Plot slope toward the East (drainage flows East/North-East)
Avoid
- ✗Toilets in the East — drains health and male children's prospects
- ✗Heavy machinery, generators, AC compressors in East
- ✗Tall trees blocking morning sun
- ✗Storerooms in East corners (blocks fresh prana)
- ✗Master bedroom in East (better in South-West)
Remedies & Vastu Corrections
- 1
Place an East-facing meditation seat or pooja shrine. Spend 5-10 minutes in morning sun daily, sitting on the floor facing East.
- 2
Hang a Surya Yantra or sun motif on the East wall. Light a ghee diya in front of it every morning.
- 3
Open East windows wide between sunrise and 9 AM daily.
- 4
If you can't change a misaligned East zone, hang a copper Vastu pyramid in the East. The shape redirects unfavourable energy.
- 5
Plant low flowering plants (jasmine, tulsi, marigold) in pots near East windows.
Auspicious Colours
Light yellows, white, very pale greens. Avoid heavy reds and browns.
Energy Activators
- • Bell hung at the East entrance — its sound clears stagnation each morning
- • Surya Yantra (copper or gold)
- • Image of rising sun, Ganesha, or Hanuman
- • Wind chime in light tones
Frequently Asked Questions
Is East-facing better than North-facing?▼
Both are auspicious — they govern slightly different domains. North is the wealth direction (money, business). East is the health-and-fame direction (vitality, social standing, children's development). For a businessperson, North-facing has a slight edge. For a family, especially with children, East-facing is often equal or preferable. Both vastly outperform South-facing or West-facing in terms of natural energetic alignment.
What does it mean if my East has no windows?▼
It's a significant Vastu defect. Sunlight from the East is the day's first prana-charging influence — a windowless East cuts the family off from this. Symptoms: sluggish mornings, family members feeling tired despite enough sleep, recurrent minor illnesses. Remedy: install a window if at all possible (even a small ventilator-sized one); if not possible, place a large mirror on the East wall to reflect light from elsewhere, hang a sun image, and ensure morning lights in this zone are always bright in the early hours.
Where should I keep the pooja room — East or North-East?▼
Both are excellent. North-East (Ishaan / Eshanya) is the IDEAL — it's the most sacred direction in Vastu, ruled by Shiva. East is the secondary best. If your home doesn't allow either, the second floor's North-East corner is a workable alternative. Avoid: pooja room above a toilet, below a staircase, or in the South / South-West (negates the deity's energy).
