Nadi Dosha

In Vedic marriage matching (Ashtakoot Guna Milan), one of the eight Kootas is 'Nadi' — the matching of the bride's and groom's Nakshatras to one of three categories: Adi (beginning), Madhya (middle), Antya (end). Nadi Koota carries 8 of the total 36 points — the highest weight of any Koota.

Nadi Dosha occurs when both partners have the same Nadi (both Adi, both Madhya, or both Antya). This scores 0/8 — and because Nadi is the highest-weighted Koota, this 0 alone can drag a marriage's overall compatibility score below the 18-point threshold considered acceptable.

The classical interpretation: same-Nadi couples carry similar pranic / energetic signatures. Just as similar magnetic poles repel each other, same-Nadi partners produce a kind of energetic friction over time — manifesting as health issues, fertility difficulties, and ongoing tension despite love being present.

The 27 Nakshatras are divided into three groups of 9 each, repeating in a cycle:

When the bride and groom both belong to the same group, they have the same Nadi → Nadi Dosha is present. If their Nadis differ, the marriage scores 8/8 in this Koota.

**Health concerns**: One or both partners may face chronic health issues — particularly nervous system disorders, fertility problems, miscarriages. Adi Nadi same-Nadi tends toward psychological / nervous problems; Madhya Nadi toward digestive/metabolic; Antya Nadi toward circulation/immune issues.

**Fertility difficulty**: The most-cited effect. Couples may struggle to conceive despite no medical cause, or face recurrent miscarriages. When children do come, the family size is often smaller than planned.

**Friction without specific cause**: Many same-Nadi couples report ongoing low-grade tension that they can't pinpoint to any specific issue — 'we love each other but something is always slightly off.' This is the classical Nadi Dosha signature.

Classical texts (Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, Muhurta Chintamani) list specific conditions under which Nadi Dosha is cancelled. If ANY of these apply, the marriage is considered safe despite the same Nadi:

**1. Same Rashi (Moon sign), different Nakshatra**: Both partners share Moon sign but their birth Nakshatras differ. The shared Moon sign neutralises the same-Nadi friction.

**2. Same Nakshatra, different Pada (quarter)**: If both have the same birth Nakshatra but different Padas (e.g., Hasta 2nd vs Hasta 4th), the Nadi defect is cancelled.

**3. Specifically same Nakshatra, different Rashi**: Nakshatras spanning multiple signs (Krittika, Punarvasu, Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada) — when both have different sub-positions across the sign boundary, Nadi Dosha cancels.

**4. Mutual aspect of Lagna lords**: If the lord of the bride's Lagna and the lord of the groom's Lagna share a friendly relationship, the dosha softens significantly.

**5. High Bhakoot Koota score**: If the marriage scores 7-8/8 in Bhakoot (relationship between Moon signs), it can compensate for Nadi 0/8.

**6. Strong Jupiter in both charts**: Jupiter is the karaka of marriage and dharma. When strong in both partners' charts, the cosmic mitigating force overrides the Nadi friction.

**7. Total Ashtakoot score above 25**: Some traditional astrologers hold that if all OTHER Kootas score very high (25+ out of 28), the overall match is strong enough that Nadi Dosha is implicitly compensated for.
