South-East (Agneya)
The fire direction — Agni's quarter, the only correct location for the kitchen.
What South-East (Agneya) Governs
The South-East corner — called Agneya — is the home of Agni, the god of fire. This is the ONLY direction Vastu prescribes for the kitchen. The fire element here is in its natural seat, and its activity (cooking) supports the family's health and prosperity rather than disrupting it.
Agneya also governs the female head of the household (the woman who runs the home), gut health, energy levels, courage, and the quality of the daily food. A properly oriented Agneya kitchen — with the cook facing East while cooking — produces meals that nourish energetically as well as nutritionally.
Misalignment of the kitchen's direction is one of the most common modern Vastu defects (apartment builders rarely consider it). The good news: most kitchen-related Vastu issues can be substantially mitigated through the cook's facing direction, the placement of the gas stove, and the colour scheme.

If kitchen ISN'T in South-East, the most important fix: ensure the gas stove is placed ON the SE wall of whatever room the kitchen IS in, and that the cook faces East while cooking.

If the master bedroom is in SE, place a copper Vastu pyramid in the room and use earthy / cooling colours. Avoid sleeping with feet pointing toward fire elements.

Keep the Agneya zone hot and active — don't shutter it off. Cooking, electrical activity, even bright lighting all keep the fire element honoured.

Why must the cook face East while cooking?▼
Because the East is the sun's direction and Agneya kitchen + East-facing cook combines the morning sun's positive energy with the fire element's transformation. Food cooked under this alignment carries strong prana — it nourishes more deeply. Conversely, a cook facing North or West interrupts the natural alignment and makes the food less energetically supportive over time. This applies even when the kitchen itself is misaligned — the cook's facing direction is the single most controllable factor.
Can I have a master bedroom in South-East if no other option exists?▼
Possible with mitigations, but not ideal. Symptoms include irritability, marital friction, sleep disturbance, and overheating tendencies in occupants. Mitigations: cooler colour scheme (avoid red); place the bed away from the SE wall; ensure the bed's headboard points East or South (NEVER North); install a copper Vastu pyramid; keep the room well-ventilated. If marital friction develops, prioritise relocating the master bedroom to South-West (the ideal direction for it) at the next opportunity.
Where should the gas stove be placed in the kitchen?▼
On the SE wall of the kitchen, with the cook facing East. The stove should not be placed adjacent to the sink (water + fire clash) — keep at least 3 feet between them, ideally with a separator. The stove should be visible from the kitchen entrance. Avoid placing the stove directly under a window (wind disturbs the flame's energy), under a beam, or back-to-back with the wall of a toilet/bathroom.
