Vastu Direction Reference · Water + Space
North-East (Ishaan / Eshanya)
The most sacred Vastu direction — Shiva's quarter for prayer, water sources, and spiritual elevation.
What North-East (Ishaan / Eshanya) Governs
The North-East corner — called Ishaan or Eshanya — is the single most sacred direction in Vastu. It's where the energies of North (water, wealth) and East (sun, health) meet, and it's ruled by Lord Shiva himself. The Vastu Purusha (the cosmic figure on whom every plot is measured) has his head pointing exactly to this corner.
Whatever happens in the North-East ripples through the entire home. A clean, light, water-bearing North-East attracts prosperity, health, peace, spiritual growth, and family harmony. A heavy, blocked, or polluted North-East is the most damaging Vastu defect possible — even worse than a misaligned main entrance.
This is the ONLY direction where you should place religious objects, water sources, and the most sensitive elements of the home. It must be kept open, well-lit, and free of clutter. The slope of the entire plot should ideally drop toward the North-East — this is called 'Ishaan Slope' and is among the most prosperity-positive Vastu features.
Best Uses
- ✓Pooja room / meditation altar — ideal location
- ✓Water sources — borewell, water tank, water filter
- ✓Open courtyard / atrium / garden
- ✓Low-level seating area for receiving guests
- ✓Plot slope draining toward this corner
Avoid
- ✗Toilets in North-East — the most damaging Vastu defect (called 'Vastu Purusha's head' — toilets here metaphorically defile his head)
- ✗Kitchen in NE — fire and water elements clash sharply
- ✗Master bedroom in NE
- ✗Heavy storage / store rooms / wardrobes
- ✗Septic tanks, garbage bins, sewage systems
- ✗Tall trees blocking light
Remedies & Vastu Corrections
- 1
If a toilet is in NE: keep door tightly closed at all times; place a copper or brass Pakhand Bhairav idol just outside (it 'protects' the corner); maintain a sea-salt bowl inside (changed weekly); install a copper plate with the Vastu Yantra symbol on the wall facing the toilet; consider relocating the toilet during any future renovation — this is THE single most-impactful Vastu correction available.
- 2
Keep a small water source (a fountain, a brass kalash filled with water) in the NE corner. Change the water every Friday morning.
- 3
Install a Vastu Pyramid (copper) on the NE wall — particularly when other defects exist elsewhere.
- 4
Light a ghee diya in this corner each morning. Even just 10 minutes of flame here transforms the home's energy field.
- 5
Place a Tulsi plant in a slightly elevated terracotta pot in the NE — Tulsi's sattvic energy is uniquely suited to this direction.
Auspicious Colours
White, off-white, light yellow, very pale blue. Absolutely avoid red and dark colours.
Energy Activators
- • Tulsi plant in elevated pot
- • Crystal water dispenser
- • Small Shiva Lingam (white marble or crystal)
- • Vastu Pyramid (copper or brass)
- • Wind chime in five rods (representing five elements)
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a toilet in the North-East the worst Vastu defect possible?▼
Yes — classical Vastu treats it as the single most damaging defect. The North-East is the Vastu Purusha's head, and a toilet here is metaphorically defiling that head. Effects can include chronic financial drain, family discord, recurrent illness, infertility, and difficulty with spiritual practice. Mitigations help significantly but the structural fix (relocating the toilet) is the only complete remedy. Many families plan major renovations specifically to relocate an NE toilet.
Should the entire plot slope toward the North-East?▼
Yes — this is called 'Ishaan Slope' or 'East-North-East Slope' and is one of the most powerful Vastu features. Rainwater drainage flowing toward the NE means the property's energy naturally exits through this corner, drawing fresh energy in. The opposite (slope toward South-West) is significantly inauspicious. If your existing plot can't be re-graded, a smaller-scale solution is to ensure your home's plumbing drainage points toward NE.
Can the kitchen be in North-East?▼
It's strongly inadvisable. The kitchen carries the fire element (Agni), and the North-East is sacred space for water and spiritual energy — they clash sharply. Symptoms: family members suffer recurring health issues, especially gastric and respiratory problems; emotional volatility; financial drain. If unavoidable, mitigate with: a brass Hanuman idol on the kitchen's south wall, a small water bowl in the NE corner of the kitchen itself, and never use the kitchen for storing wealth / valuables.
