What North Governs
The North in Vastu is ruled by Kuber, the cosmic treasurer, and is associated with the water element. Energy flowing into the home from the North is generally considered the most prosperity-positive of all directions — which is why North-facing main entrances are highly prized in classical Vastu. The morning sun reaching North-facing windows energises the wealth zone.
Beyond money, the North governs career growth, business opportunities, networking, and water-related comfort (drinking water, water tanks, rain harvesting). It is also associated with Mercury — the planet of commerce — making it the natural seat for office desks, cash registers, and financial document storage.
When the North zone of a property is heavy, blocked, or used for waste / fire activities, the family's cash flow tends to stagnate. Conversely, a clean, light, slightly-sloped-toward-North layout is the most reliably wealth-producing arrangement in Vastu.

Is a North-facing house always good?▼
Generally yes — North-facing entrances are among the most prized in classical Vastu. However, several other factors matter: the slope of the plot (should slope toward North or East), the placement of the toilet (must NOT be in North), the kitchen direction, and the position of the staircase. A North-facing house with all these correct is excellent; a North-facing house with a North toilet may actually drain wealth.
Can I keep my safe / locker in the North?▼
Yes, AND the locker should open toward the North (the door of the safe faces North so when you open it, you face South). This way the wealth flows out into the North quadrant, attracting more. Locker placed in the South-West corner of a North wall is the strongest position.
What if my house's North has a bathroom?▼
It's a Vastu defect but not a deal-breaker. Mitigations: keep the bathroom door closed at all times; install an exhaust fan; place a small mirror inside facing a wall (not the toilet); maintain a bowl of sea-salt in the bathroom (changed weekly); keep the bathroom spotlessly clean. Don't store cash, valuables, or financial documents in the bathroom or adjacent walls.
Should I sleep with my head pointing North?▼
NO — Vastu specifically advises AGAINST sleeping with head pointed North. The reason is geomagnetic: the human body acts like a magnet with North polarity at the head. Sleeping head-North aligns your head with Earth's North pole — same poles repelling each other creates restless sleep, blood-pressure issues, and disturbed dreams. Best directions for sleeping head: South (most auspicious), East (good), West (acceptable). Never North.
