What is Mangal Dosha?
Mangal Dosha — also called Kuja Dosha or Manglik Dosha — occurs when Mars is placed in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house of the Lagna (ascendant) chart. In Vedic astrology, Mars represents energy, aggression, passion, and conflict. Its presence in these specific houses is believed to affect marriage timing, the spouse's wellbeing, and the overall harmony of married life.
The severity of the dosha depends on Mars' exact placement, the aspects of other planets, and the Nakshatra it occupies. In some cases the dosha is automatically cancelled (dosha nivaran) — for example, when Mars is in its own sign (Aries, Scorpio) or exalted in Capricorn, or when both partners are Manglik.
Which Houses Create the Dosha?
| House | Domain | Possible Effect |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | Self, personality | Short temper, clashes with spouse |
| 2nd | Family, speech | Family disputes, harsh communication |
| 4th | Home, comfort | Unrest in domestic life |
| 7th | Marriage, spouse | Delays in marriage, friction with partner |
| 8th | Longevity, obstacles | Concerns about spouse's health |
| 12th | Expenses, bed pleasures | Financial strain, physical restlessness |
How to Interpret Your Result
High severity: Mars is in the 7th or 8th house with no beneficial aspect from Jupiter or Venus. Be thoughtful about marriage timing and partner selection. A consultation with an experienced astrologer is recommended.
Medium severity: Mars is in a dosha-causing house but receives a benefic aspect from Jupiter or Venus. The impact is moderated, but remedies still help.
Low severity: Mars is in a dosha-causing house but in its own sign or exalted. The dosha is largely neutralised. Simple remedies suffice.
No dosha: Mars is in a neutral house. You are not Manglik.
Note: If both partners are Manglik, the effect often cancels out — which is why running a proper Kundli Milan before marriage matters more than the dosha status itself.
Common Remedies
- ●Fast on Tuesdays and recite the Hanuman Chalisa.
- ●Wear Red Coral (Moonga) gemstone — only after consulting a qualified astrologer.
- ●Chant “Om Ang Angarakaya Namah” mantra 108 times daily.
- ●Donate red cloth, masoor dal, or jaggery on Tuesdays.
- ●Install a Mangal Yantra at home and perform regular puja.
- ●Kumbh Vivah or Ghat Vivah — a traditional ritual that symbolically nullifies the dosha before the real marriage.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should a Manglik only marry another Manglik?▾
No — this is a misconception. If the dosha severity is low or naturally cancelled by other factors, a Manglik can marry a non-Manglik successfully. What matters is running a full Kundli Milan (36-point match), not just the dosha label.
Does Mangal Dosha stay for life?▾
The planetary placement is fixed at birth and doesn't change. However, its active impact varies with transits (Gochar), Dasha periods, and the remedies you follow. The “felt” intensity typically reduces over time.
Does Kumbh Vivah really work?▾
Traditionally, this ritual symbolically completes a “first marriage” with a sacred pot or tree so the real marriage doesn't bear the dosha's brunt. Its efficacy depends on belief and classical astrological logic — it's one of several traditional remedies, not a guaranteed fix.
Does the dosha end after age 28?▾
A popular belief says Mangal Dosha weakens significantly after 28, but this isn't a universal rule. Whether and when it softens depends on the full chart — transits, Dasha, and supporting yogas.
I don't know my birth time — will the result be accurate?▾
Our calculator can compute Mars' sign from your date of birth alone, which is sufficient to detect the core dosha. House-level analysis (for severity) needs birth time and place. Try to get at least an approximate time from family records.
