Bhadrapada • Krishna Paksha • Ashtami
The midnight birth of Lord Krishna in the prison of Mathura — celebrated with bhajan, dahi-handi and Nishita puja.
Date for this festival is not yet available. Please check back later.
Krishna's birth at midnight under maximum darkness symbolises the eternal truth that the divine descends precisely when adharma is at its peak. Janmashtami is the most celebrated avatar-jayanti — observed across all Vaishnava traditions, ISKCON globally, and culturally even by non-religious Indians. Spiritual aspirants observe a fast and stay awake until the Nishita Kaal (midnight) abhishek — replicating the moment of his manifestation.
On the dark midnight of Bhadrapada Krishna Ashtami, in a stormy prison cell of Mathura, Devaki gave birth to her eighth child — Krishna, the eighth avatar of Vishnu. King Kamsa, his maternal uncle, had killed Devaki's previous seven children to prevent the prophecy of his own death. Vasudeva, Krishna's father, miraculously freed of his shackles, carried the newborn across the rising Yamuna to Gokul, exchanging him with Yashoda's just-born daughter. The Yamuna parted, Sheshnaga shielded them from rain, and Krishna's leela in this world began.
Presiding Deity:Krishna
Observe a fast from sunrise — Phalahari (fruits, milk) or Nirjala depending on capability. The fast is broken after Nishita Kaal puja or the next morning per tradition.
Decorate the home and a small jhula (cradle) for baby Krishna. Place his murti or laddu Gopal idol in the cradle.
Perform Krishna Janma abhishek at exactly midnight (Nishita Kaal) — bathe the murti with panchamrit, then water, then dress in new yellow/blue clothes and ornaments.
Offer 56 bhog (Chappan Bhog) — 56 different food items including makhan-mishri, panjiri, peda, kheer, fruits — placed before Krishna.
Sing bhajans, kirtan, recite the Bhagavata Purana 10th canto (Krishna's birth story). Chant 'Hare Krishna Hare Rama' or Krishna ashtottara shata namavali.
Next day: Dahi Handi (Govinda) celebration — human pyramids break a high-suspended pot of curd, recreating Krishna's makhan-chori leela. Maharashtra is famous for grand Dahi Handis.
Visit a Krishna temple — Mathura, Vrindavan, Dwarka, Puri, Udupi see millions of devotees on Janmashtami.
When is Krishna Janmashtami in 2026?
Krishna Janmashtami in 2026 is on TBA — Bhadrapada Krishna Ashtami. Smartas and Vaishnavas may observe on different days; Smartas follow Ashtami present at Nishita Kaal, Vaishnavas follow Udaya Tithi.
What is Chappan Bhog and why 56 items?
When Krishna lifted Govardhan for 7 days, he ate nothing. Yashoda calculated his usual 8 meals/day × 7 days = 56 missed meals, and offered all 56 at once after Govardhan Puja. The tradition continues — Chappan Bhog at Janmashtami honours that maternal devotion.
Why is Krishna's idol bathed in panchamrit?
Panchamrit (milk-curd-ghee-honey-sugar) represents the five nectars of life. Krishna in Gokul was fed all five by Yashoda; ritually offering them at his birth abhishek is feeding the newborn deity.
Is dahi-handi only a Maharashtra custom?
Dahi Handi is most spectacular in Maharashtra (especially Mumbai's Govinda squads forming 9-storey pyramids), but is also celebrated in Gujarat (Matki Phod) and parts of UP. The story behind it — child Krishna stealing butter from elevated pots — is universal across Krishna devotees.
Can children observe Janmashtami fast?
Children should not keep a Nirjala fast. Fruits, milk and a single sattvic meal at Nishita Kaal is appropriate for older children (~10+). Encourage participation through dressing as Krishna/Radha, decorating the cradle, and learning the leela stories — the bhakti matters more than fasting.
Holi

Ganesh Chaturthi
The 10-day arrival of Lord Ganesha — the remover of obstacles — into homes and pandals across India.
Maha Shivaratri
The great night of Shiva — the convergence of Shakti and Shiva, when consciousness itself awakens.
