Phalguna • Krishna Paksha • Chaturdashi
The great night of Shiva — the convergence of Shakti and Shiva, when consciousness itself awakens.
Date for this festival is not yet available. Please check back later.
Spiritually, Shivaratri is the night when the Earth's natural upsurge of energy aids the seeker — staying awake, spine erect, with attention turned inward, allows consciousness to ascend through the chakras. Tantric and yogic traditions consider this the most powerful night of the year for sadhana. Married women observe the vrat for marital harmony; unmarried women for a Shiva-like husband.
Maha Shivaratri falls on the Chaturdashi of Phalguna Krishna Paksha. The Shiva Purana records multiple events of this night: Shiva's cosmic Tandava dance of creation-preservation-destruction, his marriage to Parvati, his manifestation as the infinite Jyotirlinga of fire that neither Brahma nor Vishnu could find the ends of, and his consumption of the Halahala poison from the Samudra Manthan to save creation. Of the twelve monthly Shivaratris, this one is the 'Maha' (great) — the planetary alignment makes the natural upward energy of consciousness peak through the night.
Presiding Deity:Shiva
Begin with a pre-dawn bath, ideally in a river or by adding Ganga jal at home. Wear clean white or saffron clothes.
Observe a complete day-and-night fast (Nirjala or Phalahari). Do not sleep during the night — sit upright with spine erect.
Perform Rudrabhishek with Panchamrit (milk, curd, ghee, honey, sugar) followed by water, on a Shivling.
Offer bilva (bel) leaves — three-fold leaves represent the trinity. Offer dhatura, white flowers, sandalwood. Never tulsi or ketaki.
Chant 'Om Namah Shivaya' continuously, ideally 108 times in each of the 4 night prahars. Recite Mahamrityunjaya Mantra and Shiva Tandava Stotra.
Each of the 4 night prahars has its own pooja: 1st (Jal/water), 2nd (Curd), 3rd (Ghee), 4th (Honey).
Break the fast the next morning after sunrise with Shiva-prasad and a simple sattvic meal. Donate to a Shiva temple.
When is Maha Shivaratri in 2026?
Maha Shivaratri in 2026 is on TBA. The Chaturdashi tithi must prevail during Nishita Kaal (midnight) on the chosen night.
Why must Shiva devotees stay awake all night?
On Shivaratri night, the natural upsurge of energy in the human system reaches its annual peak. Sleep allows this energy to dissipate; staying awake with spine erect lets it rise through the chakras — the yogic basis of the all-night vigil.
Can a non-Hindu observe Shivaratri?
Yes. Shiva is the principle of pure consciousness — not bound by religion. Anyone may observe the night of stillness, fasting, and inward attention. Many non-Hindu sadhakas attend Shivaratri at Isha, Kashi, and other Shiva kshetras.
What can be eaten during Shivaratri fast?
Strict observers keep Nirjala (no food, no water). Phalahari devotees may consume fruits, milk, water, sabudana, kuttu/singhada flour items, sendha namak (rock salt) — no grains, regular salt, or pulses.
Why is bilva leaf so important in Shiva worship?
The three lobes of the bilva leaf represent the trinity (Brahma-Vishnu-Shiva), the three eyes of Shiva, and the three gunas. Skanda Purana states a single bilva offered with devotion equals offering all flowers of the universe to Shiva.
Holi
The festival of colours — celebrating the burning of evil (Holika), the love of Radha-Krishna, and the arrival of spring.
Krishna Janmashtami
The midnight birth of Lord Krishna in the prison of Mathura — celebrated with bhajan, dahi-handi and Nishita puja.
Akshaya Tritiya
The day whose virtue never diminishes — most auspicious for new beginnings, gold purchase, and charity.
