Chaitra • Shukla Paksha • Navami
The midday birth of Lord Rama in Ayodhya — the supreme avatar of dharma, the Maryada Purushottama.
Date for this festival is not yet available. Please check back later.
Rama is venerated as Maryada Purushottama — the perfect human embodying ideal son, brother, husband, king, and warrior — the highest standard of dharmic living. Unlike Krishna's leela that sometimes transcends rules, Rama is exemplary in always upholding dharma even at personal cost. Ram Navami is most spectacular in Ayodhya (where the Ram Janmabhoomi temple now hosts massive celebrations), Rameshwaram, Bhadrachalam, and across the entire Ramcharitmanas-reading belt.
On Chaitra Shukla Navami at midday (Madhyahna Kaal), under the Punarvasu Nakshatra and Karka Lagna, Lord Rama was born to King Dasharatha and Queen Kausalya in Ayodhya. The Valmiki Ramayana and Tulsidas's Ramcharitmanas record this as the seventh avatar of Vishnu, taken to slay the demon Ravana and restore dharma. Ram Navami concludes the 9-day Chaitra Navratri — the spring counterpart of Sharad Navratri — making Rama's birth the culmination of Devi worship.
Presiding Deity:Rama
Begin Chaitra Navratri (9 days before) with Kalash Sthapana — fast or eat sattvic food through all 9 days, culminating on Ram Navami.
On Ram Navami: pre-dawn bath, wear yellow or saffron clothes. Set up a small altar with Rama-Sita-Lakshman-Hanuman murtis or pictures.
Recite Sundarkand and Ram Raksha Stotra in the morning. Read at least one chapter of the Ramcharitmanas.
Perform Ram Janma puja exactly at Madhyahna Kaal (midday). Offer panchamrit abhishek, tulsi, yellow flowers, kheer, and panchamrit prasad.
Sing 'Shri Ramachandra kripalu bhaja mana' and 'Hum katha sunate Ram sakal guna dhama'. Continuous Ramnaam japa is most beloved.
Kanya Pujan: many families also do Kanya Pujan (worship of 9 young girls) on the morning of Ram Navami, completing Navratri.
Visit a Ram temple — Ayodhya, Sita Samahit Sthal (Sitamarhi), Rameshwaram, and Bhadrachalam see the largest crowds.
When is Ram Navami in 2026?
Ram Navami 2026 is on TBA — Chaitra Shukla Navami. The Madhyahna Kaal puja muhurat is around midday; check your city's exact window.
What is the difference between Chaitra Navratri and Sharad Navratri?
Chaitra Navratri (March-April) is the spring Navratri, ending with Ram Navami — emphasising new beginnings and the year's start (Chaitra is the first Hindu lunar month). Sharad Navratri (Sept-Oct) is the autumn Navratri, ending with Dussehra — emphasising the victory over evil. Both honour the 9 forms of Durga; Chaitra is more austere, Sharad more festive.
Why is the Sundarkand recited on Ram Navami?
Sundarkand (the 5th kand of Ramcharitmanas) tells of Hanuman's journey to Lanka, his discovery of Sita, and his return — it is the only kand named for its own beauty (Sundar = beautiful). Reciting it on Ram Navami is believed to remove obstacles, fulfil sankalpas, and earn Hanuman ji's grace, who then opens the door to Rama's blessings.
Should the Ram Navami fast be Nirjala or Phalahari?
Both are valid based on capability. Strict observers fast Nirjala (no food, no water) until the midday Ram Janma puja, then break with charanamrit and prasad. Phalahari (fruits, milk, sabudana, kuttu) is acceptable for most. Avoid grains, regular salt, onions, and garlic on this day.
Is Ram Navami a public holiday?
Ram Navami is a gazetted (national) public holiday in India — central government offices, banks and most state government offices remain closed. Schools and many private establishments observe it as well, especially in UP, Bihar, MP, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra.
Hanuman Jayanti
The birth of Sankat Mochan Hanuman — the eternal devotee of Rama, the destroyer of obstacles, and the Chiranjeevi who walks the earth still.
Krishna Janmashtami
The midnight birth of Lord Krishna in the prison of Mathura — celebrated with bhajan, dahi-handi and Nishita puja.
Dussehra (Vijayadashami)
The 10th day victory — Rama's triumph over Ravana, and Durga's slaying of Mahishasura. The supreme abujh muhurat.
