Ashwin • Shukla Paksha • Pratipada to Navami
The 9 nights of Durga — worshipping the nine forms of the Goddess as she conquers Mahishasura, culminating in Vijayadashami.
Date for this festival is not yet available. Please check back later.
Sharad Navratri is the most celebrated of the 4 Navratris (Chaitra/Sharad/Magha/Ashadha — the latter 2 are Gupt Navratri for tantric sadhana). Across India: Bengal celebrates as Durga Puja (5 days, with the Mahalaya, Shashti, Saptami, Ashtami, Navami, Dashami sequence and clay murti immersion). Gujarat celebrates with Garba and Dandiya raas every night. Maharashtra and Karnataka observe Ghatasthapana and daily Devi paath. Kerala and Tamil Nadu observe Saraswati Puja and Ayudha Puja in the latter days. The festival concludes with Vijayadashami.
Sharad Navratri commemorates Goddess Durga's 9-day battle with the buffalo-demon Mahishasura, culminating in his slaying on the 10th day (Vijayadashami). Mahishasura, blessed with the boon that no man could kill him, terrorised devas and earth alike. The combined energies of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva manifested as Durga — the warrior-mother form of the Devi. The 9 nights chronicle the 9 forms she assumed for the battle: Shailaputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skandamata, Katyayani, Kalaratri, Mahagauri, Siddhidatri. Each night invokes a different aspect of Shakti.
Presiding Deity:Durga (in 9 forms)
Day 1 (Pratipada): Ghatasthapana / Kalash Sthapana — establish a clay/copper kalash with water, mango leaves, coconut, in a clean north-east corner. Sow barley seeds (jowar/jaa) for prediction of household prosperity.
Daily: morning bath, fresh clothes, light a Akhand Jyoti (continuous lamp) — must burn for all 9 days unbroken. Morning and evening Devi paath.
Each day worship a different form: 1-Shailaputri, 2-Brahmacharini, 3-Chandraghanta, 4-Kushmanda, 5-Skandamata, 6-Katyayani, 7-Kalaratri, 8-Mahagauri, 9-Siddhidatri. Each has its own colour, bhog and mantra.
Recite Durga Saptashati (Devi Mahatmya — 700 verses across 13 chapters) — the foundational text. Reading completes during Navratri brings maximum punya.
Observe a fast — varies from full Nirjala to Phalahari. Common: avoid grains, regular salt, onion, garlic. Eat sabudana, kuttu/singhada flour, fruits, milk, sendha namak.
Day 8 (Ashtami) or Day 9 (Navami): perform Kanya Pujan — invite 9 young girls (5-10 years) representing the 9 forms of Durga, wash their feet, offer halwa-puri-chana, dakshina, and a small gift.
Garba/Dandiya in Gujarat-Maharashtra-Mumbai: every evening, women and men dance in concentric circles around a central garbo (clay pot with a lit lamp). Ras-garba is among India's largest dance traditions.
When is Sharad Navratri in 2026?
Sharad Navratri 2026 begins on TBA (Ashwin Shukla Pratipada — Ghatasthapana day) and continues 9 nights, concluding with Vijayadashami on the 10th day. Each day has its own form, colour and bhog.
What are the 9 colours of Navratri?
The 9 colours rotate each year based on the day of the week Pratipada falls on. A common sequence: orange-white-red-royal blue-yellow-green-grey-purple-peacock green. Wearing the day's colour invokes the Devi's specific blessings — devotees coordinate their attire with the rotational colour calendar.
Why are 9 unmarried girls worshipped during Kanya Pujan?
The 9 girls (typically 5-10 years old) embody the 9 forms of Durga in unmarried, pure form — Kanya is shastra-recognised as Devi-rupa. By feeding and gifting them, the vrati invokes the actual presence of the 9 Devis. Many include a young boy as Bhairava (the protector). The girls' feet are washed, tilak applied, and halwa-puri-chana with dakshina offered.
Can I observe Navratri without fasting?
Yes. The fast is one form of devotion, but not the only one. Path of Durga Saptashati, Akhand Jyoti, daily Devi puja, sattvic eating (avoiding tamasic foods), brahmacharya, and Kanya Pujan are equally valid. Many elderly, ill, pregnant, or working professionals observe Navratri without strict fasting.
What is the difference between Durga Puja and Navratri?
Same festival, different regional expressions. Durga Puja is the Bengali tradition — 5 days (Shashti to Dashami), elaborate clay pratimas (idols) of Durga + Lakshmi + Saraswati + Ganesha + Kartikeya in pandals, cultural performances, and immersion. Navratri is the pan-Indian/North/West tradition — 9 days at home with Ghatasthapana, Kalash, daily puja, and Kanya Pujan. Both end with Vijayadashami.
Dussehra (Vijayadashami)
The 10th day victory — Rama's triumph over Ravana, and Durga's slaying of Mahishasura. The supreme abujh muhurat.
Ram Navami
The midday birth of Lord Rama in Ayodhya — the supreme avatar of dharma, the Maryada Purushottama.
Diwali (Deepavali)
The festival of lights — celebrating the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya.
