Kartik • Krishna Paksha • Amavasya
The festival of lights — celebrating the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya.
Date for this festival is not yet available. Please check back later.
Diwali is the spiritual climax of the year — the inner darkness of ego, greed and ignorance is symbolically burned by the lamp of self-knowledge. It marks the financial new year for traders (Bahi Khata Pujan), and is one of the most economically significant days in India. The five-day festival sequence (Dhanteras → Naraka Chaturdashi → Lakshmi Pujan → Govardhan Puja → Bhai Dooj) maps to the integrated wellbeing of wealth, body, soul, environment and family.
Diwali falls on the Amavasya (new moon) of Kartik Krishna Paksha. The Ramayana records that on this day Lord Rama, with Sita and Lakshmana, returned to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile and the slaying of Ravana — the citizens lit rows of clay lamps (deepa-avali) to welcome them, giving the festival its name. The Bhagavata Purana adds that Krishna killed the demon Narakasura on this night, freeing 16,000 captive women. Goddess Lakshmi is believed to have emerged from the Samudra Manthan on this very tithi and to walk the earth in search of clean, well-lit homes to bless.
Presiding Deity:Lakshmi, Ganesha, Kuber
Clean and decorate the entire home — Lakshmi visits only spotless, well-lit dwellings. Draw rangoli at the doorway and footprints leading inward.
Light an odd number of clay diyas (5, 11, 21) — at the main door, tulsi vrindavan, water source, and every room corner. Avoid candles for the puja.
Perform Lakshmi-Ganesh puja during the Pradosh Kaal (after sunset, before midnight). Place a kalash, silver coins, lotus flowers, kheel-batashe, and the new account ledger.
Wear new or freshly washed clothes — preferably red, yellow or saffron. Avoid black on Diwali night.
Distribute sweets (laddu, peda, kaju katli) to neighbours and the needy. Wealth shared on Diwali multiplies.
Open all doors and windows after the puja so Lakshmi can enter. Keep at least one diya burning through the night.
Avoid gambling, alcohol, and arguments — the energy of the night amplifies all karma.
When is Diwali in 2026?
Diwali in 2026 falls on TBA. The Amavasya tithi of Kartik Krishna Paksha must prevail during Pradosh Kaal (post-sunset) for the puja to be performed on that day — otherwise it shifts.
What is the correct Lakshmi Puja muhurat on Diwali 2026?
The Pradosh Kaal muhurat (sunset to ~2 hours after) is the standard window for households. Mahanishita Kaal around midnight is preferred by tantrics and businesses. Look up the exact window for your city on the panchang page.
Why are 5 diyas placed on Diwali?
The five diyas represent the Pancha Mahabhuta (earth, water, fire, air, ether) and the Pancha Pranas (life-energies). Lighting them invokes balance across all five elements of the body and home. Placement: main door, tulsi, kitchen, puja room, water source.
Should I do Lakshmi Puja alone or with the whole family?
Always with the family. Diwali Lakshmi Puja is a Grihasta (householder) ritual — the head of the family leads, but every member participates. Lakshmi blesses the home as a unit, not individuals.
What should NOT be done on Diwali?
Avoid gambling (despite the popular custom), alcohol, non-vegetarian food, sleeping during the puja window, lending or borrowing money, and arguments. Karma intensifies on Amavasya night — keep thoughts and actions pure.
