Chaitra • Shukla Paksha • Purnima
The birth of Sankat Mochan Hanuman — the eternal devotee of Rama, the destroyer of obstacles, and the Chiranjeevi who walks the earth still.
Date for this festival is not yet available. Please check back later.
Hanuman is the Sankat Mochan — the destroyer of all obstacles. He is also one of the eight Chiranjeevis (immortals) said to walk the earth still, present wherever the Ramayana is recited. As Rudravatara (an avatar of Shiva), he commands the trishakti of strength (bal), intelligence (buddhi) and devotion (bhakti). Tuesday and Saturday are dedicated to him; Hanuman Chalisa is the most-recited Hindu hymn worldwide. South India and some traditions celebrate Hanuman Jayanti on a different date (Vaishakha or Margashirsha Krishna Chaturdashi), but Chaitra Purnima is the pan-Indian standard.
Hanuman was born to Anjana (a celestial nymph cursed to live as a vanara) and Vayu (the wind god) on Chaitra Purnima at sunrise. As an infant, he leapt to swallow the rising sun mistaking it for a fruit; Indra struck him with the vajra to stop him, breaking his jaw (hanu) — hence the name 'Hanuman'. The shocked Vayu withdrew air from the world, forcing the gods to revive Hanuman with multiple boons: indestructibility, supreme strength, ability to change form and size, and immortality. He went on to become Rama's foremost devotee and the central figure of the Sundarkand.
Presiding Deity:Hanuman
Pre-dawn bath, wear red or saffron clothes (Hanuman's favourite). Many devotees fast the entire day, breaking after sunset Hanuman puja.
Visit a Hanuman temple at sunrise — the moment of his birth. Offer sindoor (vermillion), chameli (jasmine) oil, red flowers, jaggery, gram (chana), and besan ladoo or boondi.
Recite the Hanuman Chalisa (40 verses) at least 7 times. The Sundarkand recitation is considered ideal — many host Sundarkand path at home with friends.
Apply sindoor mixed with chameli oil to the Hanuman murti — the legend is that Sita applied sindoor to her hair-parting for Rama's long life, and Hanuman applied it all over his body to grant Rama infinite life.
Offer a paan or beeda — Hanuman's documented favourite naivedya, especially in North Indian traditions.
Donate red items: red cloth, jaggery, urad dal, almonds. Also give to street-side Hanuman temples and feeding monkeys (Hanuman's vanara family).
Recite the Bajrang Baan if facing severe obstacles or fear — but only after a Hanuman Chalisa first, as a request to Hanuman to direct his force at the obstacle.
When is Hanuman Jayanti in 2026?
Hanuman Jayanti 2026 is on TBA — Chaitra Purnima. South Indian and some Tamil traditions celebrate on a different date (Margashirsha Krishna Chaturdashi or Vaishakha Krishna), but Chaitra Purnima is the pan-Indian standard.
Why is sindoor offered to Hanuman?
When Hanuman saw Sita applying sindoor to her hair-parting and learnt it grants long life to her husband (Rama), he reasoned that if a small amount on the parting helped, applying it all over his body would grant Rama infinite life. He covered himself in sindoor — Rama, deeply moved, declared sindoor would forever be Hanuman's beloved offering.
Why is the Hanuman Chalisa so powerful?
Composed by Goswami Tulsidas in the 16th century in Awadhi, the 40 verses cover Hanuman's birth, attributes, leelas, and protective benefits. Saints have testified it removes fear, illness, financial troubles, and obstacles. The 7th verse 'Sankat te Hanuman Chudave' is especially invoked for crisis. Its accessibility (any literate person can read in 5 minutes) and Hanuman's promise that he is present wherever it is recited make it the most beloved Hindu hymn.
Can women worship Hanuman?
Yes, absolutely. The myth that women cannot worship Hanuman is a misconception. Hanuman is a Brahmachari (celibate) and treats every woman as a mother — Sita Maa is his eternal mother. Women may read Hanuman Chalisa, visit temples, and offer sindoor, flowers and prasad. The only restriction in some traditions is that women may not personally touch the Hanuman murti to apply sindoor — they offer it via the priest.
Why is Tuesday Hanuman's day?
Tuesday is ruled by Mangal (Mars) — the planet of strength, courage, valour, and martial energy. Hanuman, as the embodiment of these qualities, is the presiding deity for those troubled by Mars dosha or seeking the Mars qualities. Saturday is also dedicated to him — for Shani-related troubles, Hanuman is the supreme remedy as Shani himself bowed to Hanuman in the Ramayana.
