Numerology — Mulank, Bhagyank & Namank Explained

The three core numbers of Indian numerology — what they reveal, how they're calculated, and how they differ from each other.

Three numbers, three layers of personality

Indian numerology (an ancient Vedic discipline now called 'Ank Jyotish') reads three core numbers from your birth date and name. Each number describes a different aspect of who you are — like the Sun-sign + Moon-sign + Ascendant trio in astrology, but simpler to compute and equally revealing.

Mulank (root number) — your essential nature. Calculated from your day of birth (1-31), reduced to a single digit. Mulank shows how you instinctively show up in the world.

Bhagyank (destiny number) — your life path. Calculated from your full birth date (DD + MM + YYYY) reduced to a single digit. Bhagyank shows the karmic direction your life is meant to take.

Namank (name number) — your social signature. Calculated from the numerical value of your name. Namank shows how the world receives you and the karmic effect of being called by your name.

Each of the digits 1-9 corresponds to a planet: 1 (Sun), 2 (Moon), 3 (Jupiter), 4 (Rahu), 5 (Mercury), 6 (Venus), 7 (Ketu), 8 (Saturn), 9 (Mars). So when your Mulank is 5, your essential nature is Mercury-flavoured (intelligent, communicative, restless). When your Bhagyank is 8, your life-path carries Saturn signatures (slow building, structural, eventually substantial). And so on.

The most powerful chart is when all three numbers are friends or compatible. The most challenging is when they conflict — Mulank 1 (Sun) with Namank 8 (Saturn) creates ego/discipline tension; Mulank 4 (Rahu) with Bhagyank 7 (Ketu) creates the karmic axis tension internally. Numerology aims to identify these patterns so you can leverage harmonies and adjust where conflicts strain you.

How to calculate your three numbers

Mulank: Take your day of birth (1-31). If single digit, that's your Mulank. If two digits, add them and reduce. Example: Born 15th → 1+5 = 6. Mulank = 6 (Venus). Born 23rd → 2+3 = 5. Mulank = 5 (Mercury). Born 31st → 3+1 = 4. Mulank = 4 (Rahu). Some traditions don't reduce master numbers (11, 22) but Indian numerology generally reduces fully.

Bhagyank: Add ALL digits of your birth date (DD + MM + YYYY) and reduce to a single digit. Example: Born 15 March 1990 → 1+5+0+3+1+9+9+0 = 28 → 2+8 = 10 → 1+0 = 1. Bhagyank = 1 (Sun). Always reduce until you reach a single digit.

Namank: Each letter has a numerical value (Chaldean system, used in Indian numerology):

1: A I J Q Y / 2: B K R / 3: C G L S / 4: D M T / 5: E H N X / 6: U V W / 7: O Z / 8: F P

Add the values of all letters in your name (use the name commonly used, not necessarily legal name) and reduce. Example: 'RAVI' → R(2) + A(1) + V(6) + I(1) = 10 → 1+0 = 1. Namank = 1.

Some practitioners use the Pythagorean system (1-9 sequential A-I, J-R, S-Z) but Chaldean is the traditional Indian standard.

Practical tip: Calculate all three for yourself, then your spouse, your children, and your business partners. Patterns become visible when you see them across people you know well — a Mulank-2 person really IS more emotionally sensitive than a Mulank-1, when you observe them in everyday situations.

Friendly, neutral and unfriendly number combinations

Numbers follow the same friendship rules as their ruling planets. Quick reference:

1 (Sun): Friends with 2, 3, 9. Neutral with 5. Avoids 4, 6, 7, 8.

2 (Moon): Friends with 1, 3, 5. Neutral with 4, 9. Avoids 6, 7, 8.

3 (Jupiter): Friends with 1, 2, 9. Neutral with 4, 5. Avoids 6, 7, 8.

4 (Rahu): Friends with 5, 6, 8. Neutral with 1. Avoids 2, 3, 7, 9.

5 (Mercury): Friends with 1, 4, 6. Neutral with 8. Avoids 2, 3, 7, 9.

6 (Venus): Friends with 4, 5, 8. Neutral with 7. Avoids 1, 2, 3, 9.

7 (Ketu): Friends with 1, 2 (because Sun/Moon are spiritual lights). Neutral with 6, 8, 9. Avoids 3, 4, 5.

8 (Saturn): Friends with 5, 6. Neutral with 4, 7. Avoids 1, 2, 3, 9.

9 (Mars): Friends with 1, 2, 3. Neutral with 7. Avoids 4, 5, 6, 8.

Practical use: Match these against your spouse, business partners, employees, even your address number and phone number. A 1-spouse with a 9-spouse (Sun + Mars, both kshatriya, mutually friendly) is more harmonious than a 1-spouse with an 8-spouse (Sun + Saturn, natural enemies). Frequently Asked Questions

Which is more important — Mulank or Bhagyank?+

Both, but they describe different things. Mulank shows your daily nature and how you instinctively respond — your personality. Bhagyank shows the karmic direction your life is meant to take — your destiny. Mulank is more visible day-to-day; Bhagyank is more visible in long-term life patterns. If you want to understand WHY you keep ending up in similar situations, look at Bhagyank. If you want to understand HOW you behave in those situations, look at Mulank.

Should I change my name to a luckier Namank?+

Sometimes — but with caution. If your current Namank conflicts with your Mulank/Bhagyank (e.g., Mulank 1 + Namank 8), a small spelling tweak that shifts your Namank to a friendly number can help. This is why some people add an 'i' or change 'y' to 'i' in their name. However, frequent name changes confuse the energy more than they help. Make at most one informed change after consultation, and use the new name consistently for at least 6-12 months before judging effects.

Does the calendar year affect numerology?+

Yes — every calendar year has a 'Universal Year Number' that affects everyone. Calculate by adding the year's digits and reducing (e.g., 2026 → 2+0+2+6 = 10 → 1+0 = 1, so 2026 is a Universal 1 year — favourable for new beginnings). Combine with your Mulank/Bhagyank for your 'Personal Year Number' — months when this aligns with your Mulank are especially favourable. Many people plan major decisions (job changes, weddings) around favourable Personal Year cycles.

Why are 4 and 8 considered unlucky in Indian numerology?+

Not unlucky — challenging. Both rule difficult planets (4 = Rahu, the shadow that creates obsession and sudden change; 8 = Saturn, the karmic teacher who gives slow rewards through hardship). People with these as Mulank or Bhagyank often have rougher early lives but mature into deeply substantial people. Saturn-8 people frequently become highly successful after age 36; Rahu-4 people often achieve unconventional accomplishments their peers can't replicate. The reputation as 'unlucky' is unfair — it's the price-up-front, payoff-later character of these numbers.

Can my Mulank be a master number like 11 or 22?+

In Western Pythagorean numerology, 11, 22, 33 are 'master numbers' kept un-reduced. In traditional Indian numerology, all numbers reduce to single digits 1-9. So born on the 11th, your Mulank is 1+1=2 (not 11). Born on the 22nd, Mulank is 2+2=4 (not 22). VedHoroscope follows the Indian standard (always reduce). If you've read Western numerology saying you're a master 11, that's a different system — both can be valid in their own framework.
