Navagraha — The 9 Planets of Vedic Astrology Explained

A complete reference for the 9 grahas: their significations, friendships, mantras and how they shape every Vedic chart.

The Navagraha framework

Navagraha (literally 'nine seizers') is the Vedic astrology system of nine cosmic forces that 'seize' our attention and shape our experience. Seven are the visible celestial bodies — Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn — each corresponding to a day of the week. Two are mathematical points — Rahu and Ketu, the lunar nodes where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic. These nine together explain virtually every event a Vedic astrologer interprets.

Each graha has a body of attributes: physical significations (organs, body parts), psychological significations (qualities of mind), worldly significations (career, relationships, possessions), elemental nature, gender, caste, mythology, deity, friend/enemy/neutral planets, exaltation/debilitation signs, and their own beej and stotra mantras. Vedic astrology is, at its core, the study of how these nine forces interact in your specific chart.

The 9 grahas are NOT identical with the 9 planets of modern astronomy — Vedic astrology doesn't include Uranus, Neptune, Pluto (though some modern Vedic astrologers experiment with them), and DOES include the lunar nodes (Rahu and Ketu) which Western astronomy treats as just geometric points. The Vedic system is roughly 5,000 years old and was designed for predictive use, not modern physics. Both systems work — they just work for different purposes.

Below is a complete reference to all nine, organized by their natural groupings.

The Two Lights — Sun and Moon

Sun (Surya, Ravi): The Atmakaraka (soul significator). Rules ego, vitality, leadership, father, government, authority, bones, heart, eyes (especially right). Hot, dry, masculine, kshatriya (warrior caste), ruler of the day Sunday. Friends with Moon, Mars, Jupiter; enemy of Venus and Saturn; neutral with Mercury. Exalted in Aries, debilitated in Libra. Owns Leo. Beej mantra: 'Om Hraam Hreem Hraum Sah Suryaya Namah'. Gemstone: Ruby. Day: Sunday. Direction: East.

Moon (Chandra, Soma): The Manakaraka (mind significator). Rules emotions, mother, comfort, public, water, lungs, breasts, fluids of body. Cool, moist, feminine, vaishya (merchant caste), ruler of Monday. Friends with Sun, Mercury; neutral with Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Venus; no enemies (though Rahu/Ketu eclipse him). Exalted in Taurus, debilitated in Scorpio. Owns Cancer. Beej mantra: 'Om Shraam Shreem Shraum Sah Chandraya Namah'. Gemstone: Pearl. Day: Monday. Direction: Northwest.

These two are called the 'lights' because they're the visible sources of solar and reflected light, and they together represent the masculine-feminine, soul-mind, day-night polarities of human experience. A chart with both lights well-placed has a healthy balance of ambition (Sun) and contentment (Moon). When either is afflicted, the other has to compensate — which is why so much Vedic remedial work focuses on either the Sun or the Moon.

The Personal Planets — Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus

Mars (Mangal, Bhauma, Kuja): The warrior. Rules courage, anger, energy, action, brothers, real estate, blood, muscles, accidents, surgery. Hot, dry, masculine, kshatriya, ruler of Tuesday. Friends with Sun, Moon, Jupiter; enemy of Mercury; neutral with Venus, Saturn. Exalted in Capricorn, debilitated in Cancer. Owns Aries and Scorpio. Beej mantra: 'Om Kraam Kreem Kraum Sah Bhaumaya Namah'. Gemstone: Red Coral. Day: Tuesday. Direction: South.

Mercury (Budha): The communicator. Rules intelligence, speech, commerce, learning, writing, nervous system, skin. Mixed nature, can take on the qualities of any planet he conjuncts. Vaishya, ruler of Wednesday. Friends with Sun, Venus; enemy of Moon; neutral with Mars, Jupiter, Saturn. Exalted in Virgo, debilitated in Pisces. Owns Gemini and Virgo. Beej mantra: 'Om Bram Breem Braum Sah Budhaya Namah'. Gemstone: Emerald. Day: Wednesday. Direction: North.

Jupiter (Brihaspati, Guru): The teacher and the great benefic. Rules wisdom, knowledge, religion, husband (in female charts), children (especially first), ethics, expansion, liver, fat. Warm, moist, masculine, brahmin (priest caste), ruler of Thursday. Friends with Sun, Moon, Mars; enemy of Mercury, Venus; neutral with Saturn. Exalted in Cancer, debilitated in Capricorn. Owns Sagittarius and Pisces. Beej mantra: 'Om Graam Greem Graum Sah Gurave Namah'. Gemstone: Yellow Sapphire. Day: Thursday. Direction: Northeast.

Venus (Shukra): The lover and the lesser benefic. Rules love, marriage, beauty, art, music, luxury, wife (in male charts), reproductive system, vehicles. Cool, moist, feminine, brahmin, ruler of Friday. Friends with Mercury, Saturn; enemy of Sun, Moon; neutral with Mars, Jupiter. Exalted in Pisces, debilitated in Virgo. Owns Taurus and Libra. Beej mantra: 'Om Draam Dreem Draum Sah Shukraya Namah'. Gemstone: Diamond. Day: Friday. Direction: Southeast.

The Outer / Karmic Planets — Saturn, Rahu, Ketu

Saturn (Shani): The karmic teacher. Rules discipline, longevity, structure, restriction, servants, the masses, time, bones, cold, decay. Cold, dry, neuter (some texts say male), shudra (servant caste), ruler of Saturday. Friends with Mercury, Venus; enemy of Sun, Moon, Mars; neutral with Jupiter. Exalted in Libra, debilitated in Aries. Owns Capricorn and Aquarius. Beej mantra: 'Om Pram Preem Praum Sah Shanaye Namah'. Gemstone: Blue Sapphire. Day: Saturday. Direction: West.

Rahu (North Node, Dragon's Head): The shadow planet of obsession and outward expansion. Mathematical point — no body, but tremendous effect. Rules unconventional ambitions, foreign things, technology, illusions, addictions, sudden gains and losses, eclipses (with the Moon). No own sign in classical Vedic; modern astrologers often associate him with Aquarius or Virgo. Exalted (per Parashara) in Taurus, debilitated in Scorpio (some traditions reverse this — schools differ). Beej mantra: 'Om Bhraam Bhreem Bhraum Sah Rahave Namah'. Gemstone: Hessonite (Gomed). Direction: Southwest.

Ketu (South Node, Dragon's Tail): The shadow planet of detachment and inner liberation. Mathematical point — Rahu's opposite. Rules spirituality, moksha, past-life karma, surgery, sudden separations, occult, computation, abstraction. No own sign in classical Vedic; modern astrologers often associate with Scorpio or Pisces. Exalted (per Parashara) in Scorpio, debilitated in Taurus. Beej mantra: 'Om Sraam Sreem Sraum Sah Ketave Namah'. Gemstone: Cat's Eye (Lehsunia). Direction: Northeast (some traditions say variable).

Rahu and Ketu always sit exactly 180° apart — they're two ends of the same axis (the lunar nodal line). Whatever house Rahu occupies, Ketu sits in the opposite house. This 'Rahu-Ketu axis' is one of the most important things to interpret in any Vedic chart, often more important than any single planet's placement.

How planets interact — friendships, aspects, combinations

Friendships: Each planet has friends, enemies and neutrals — five-fold relationships shown above. When two friends sit together or aspect each other, results are amplified positively. When two enemies do the same, the results are conflicted. Working astrologers use a more nuanced 'composite friendship' (Pancha Dha Maitri) which combines natural friendship with temporary friendship based on the actual chart positions — this changes the read significantly.

Aspects (Drishti): Every planet 'sees' some houses. All planets aspect the 7th from themselves. Mars additionally aspects 4th and 8th from himself. Jupiter additionally aspects 5th and 9th. Saturn additionally aspects 3rd and 10th. Rahu and Ketu aspect 5th, 7th and 9th from themselves (per Parashara). When a planet aspects a house, it influences events related to that house — even from across the chart.

Conjunctions: When two or more planets sit in the same sign and house, their energies blend. The blend can be powerful (e.g., Jupiter + Venus = Guru-Shukra Yoga, scholarly artist) or conflicted (e.g., Sun + Saturn = father-son tension within self). The closer they are by degree, the more intense the blend. Combustion (within Sun's degree threshold) is a special case where the planet's results weaken.

Yogas: When specific planetary combinations occur, they form named Yogas with predictable effects. Examples: Gajakesari (Moon-Jupiter angle) gives wisdom and prosperity; Chandra-Mangal (Moon-Mars in same house) gives wealth through enterprise; Neechabhanga Raja Yoga (cancellation of debilitation) turns weakness into strength; Kemadruma (Moon with no neighbour) creates emotional isolation. There are hundreds of Yogas — knowing the prominent ones in your chart is the bulk of personalized Vedic interpretation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are Rahu and Ketu called 'shadow' planets?+

Because they have no physical body — they're the two mathematical points where the Moon's orbital plane crosses the Sun's apparent path (the ecliptic). When the Sun, Moon and Earth align with these points, eclipses (graha 'seizing' light) occur. The mythology personifies them as a serpent (Rahu = head, Ketu = tail) that perpetually swallows and releases the lights. Astrologically, they have powerful but indirect effects — they amplify or transform whatever planets they're with, rather than acting in their own right.

Why doesn't Vedic astrology use Uranus, Neptune, Pluto?+

Because the Vedic system was designed before telescopes — Uranus was discovered in 1781, Neptune in 1846, Pluto in 1930. Vedic rules, Dasha periods, Yoga formulae, and remedial systems are all built around the seven visible bodies plus the lunar nodes. Adding new planets would require rebuilding the entire predictive framework. Some modern Vedic astrologers experiment with the outer planets, but the classical system remains complete and predictive without them. They're not ignored because they're 'wrong' — they're simply outside the system as it was constructed.

Which planet is most important to identify in my chart?+

Three planets are critical: (1) the Lagnesh (lord of your ascendant) — your overall life-force significator. (2) The Moon and his strength — your emotional reality. (3) The current Mahadasha and Antardasha lords — these run your life right now. Beyond these, the placement of Saturn (long-term structure) and Jupiter (wisdom and growth) tell you where life rewards your effort vs. demands your patience. A working astrologer reading would address all five.

Can I wear gemstones for multiple planets at once?+

Yes, but with rules. Compatible combinations: Pearl + Yellow Sapphire (Moon + Jupiter), Ruby + Yellow Sapphire (Sun + Jupiter), Pearl + Red Coral (Moon + Mars), Emerald + Diamond (Mercury + Venus). NEVER combine: Diamond + Yellow Sapphire (Venus + Jupiter, enemies), Ruby + Diamond (Sun + Venus, enemies), Pearl + Hessonite (Moon + Rahu, eclipse pair), Blue Sapphire + Ruby (Saturn + Sun, enemies). Always have a qualified astrologer prescribe — wrong combinations cancel benefits.

What's the difference between Mahadasha lord and ruling planet?+

The Mahadasha lord is the planet whose life-period you're currently in (per Vimshottari Dasha — Saturn for 19 years, Jupiter for 16, Rahu for 18, etc.). This planet is actively shaping events for you right now. The 'ruling planet' (Lagnesh) is the lord of your ascendant — the planet that represents you overall, regardless of which Mahadasha you're in. Both are important; the Mahadasha lord answers 'what's happening now?' and the Lagnesh answers 'who am I overall?'

Are Vedic astrology results scientifically proven?+

Astrology has not been validated by controlled clinical trials and is considered a non-scientific discipline by mainstream science. However, this is true of many traditional knowledge systems whose value is empirical (works in practice over generations) rather than experimental (provable in labs). Vedic astrology is best viewed as a sophisticated probabilistic interpretive system — like a deeply experienced therapist's intuition. It's valuable for self-reflection, life-planning context, and traditional cultural practice. Use it as guidance, not as deterministic prediction; combine with practical action and professional advice for medical, legal, or financial matters.
