Understanding Namakaran muhurat

Namakaran is performed traditionally on the 11th or 12th day after birth (or 16th day for births in 'gandanta' nakshatras). The name itself comes from the baby's Janma Nakshatra and Pada — there are 108 starting syllables in total. Many families wait until the 16th day if the early-day muhurat doesn't favour their child's specific nakshatra.
