Vastu Direction Reference · Air
The wind direction — Vayu's quarter for guests, transit, and supportive relationships.
Ruled by:Vayu (god of wind)The North-West (Vayavya) is the home of Vayu, the god of wind. As the wind moves things in and out, this corner governs everything that enters and leaves the home: guests, supporters, employees, friendships, allies, and short-term transactions. It also governs the unmarried daughter / older female child of the household.
Vayavya is the natural home of the guest bedroom — guests arrive and depart, mirroring Vayu's nature. Cars, bicycles, transit equipment also belong here. The NW is suited for relationship-building activities: networking dinners, friend gatherings, business hospitality.
When the NW is heavy or blocked, social network thins out: friends drift away, employees leave, business contacts dwindle. When the NW is light and active, social capital flows steadily — referrals come naturally, support arrives when needed, allies materialise at the right moments.
Classical Corrections
Non-structural remedies first — only resort to construction changes if these don't resolve the issue.
If guest bedroom is in NW, refresh the energy after every guest's stay — air the room, change linens, light a small ghee diya.
Hang a wind chime in light metal tones near the NW window. Vayu rejoices in pleasant sound.
Keep the NW lighter in colour and weight than the SW. Heavy permanent furniture in NW disrupts Vayu's mobility.
If unmarried daughter has bedroom here, place a small Saraswati Yantra or image of Goddess Saraswati on the East wall of her room. Excellent for marriage prospects when ready, education, and social skills.
Soft white, light grey, pale silver, light blue. Avoid heavy reds and dark browns.

Common Questions
Because the NW governs Vayu (wind) — the principle of arrival and departure. Guests, by definition, are people who arrive and depart. Placing them in the natural seat of arrival/departure means their stay flows smoothly: they don't overstay, the energy renews after they leave, the relationship strengthens. Guests in the SW (the foundation corner) tend to overstay or change the family dynamic uncomfortably. Guests in the NE (sacred corner) feel uncomfortable and depart abruptly.
Check the NW of your home AND your office. NW issues correlate with employee retention problems. Common causes: heavy storage in NW, NW kitchen (fire in air zone), NW master bedroom, blocked NW windows. Fix the NW environment first, then add: hang wind chime; place a small picture of friends/team; light a ghee diya weekly; ensure NW is well-ventilated. Most retention issues improve within 3-6 months of consistent correction.
Possible with mitigations. The head of household will feel a subtle 'transient' quality — like they're a guest in their own home. This often manifests as restlessness, frequent travel, or wanting to relocate. Mitigations: heavy bed-frame and wardrobe (anchor the room with weight); bed-head pointing South (NEVER toward the NW corner); place a brass tortoise figurine in the SW corner of the room. If still unsettled after 6 months, prioritise relocating to SW.
Vastu Shastra is interpretive guidance, not deterministic prescription. For major construction or renovation, consult a qualified Vastu practitioner who can evaluate your specific plot and family chart together.
